This paper presents a group setting in a hospital unit for adolescents where a team of caregivers and adolescents meet each week for the purpose of group listening. Associative sequences from several group sessions are used to examine the transformational function of this institutional therapeutic tool, as well as the means by which a process producing thirdness in the service of the work of symbolization is activated. This examination concerns, on the one hand, the psychopathological conflicts of adolescents and, on the other, the institutional problems activated by the depositing of unthought experiences. The movements that play out within a group, and from one group to another, attest to the mediating function of this setting, which is capable of fulfilling a third function of regulating and transforming the processes of unbinding, destructivity, depression, splitting, and confusion. The consideration given by the analysts to the “group associative chain” at the heart of the group dynamic is essential.
