This paper examines the qualities of a psychoanalytic method of observation suitable for grasping the levels of the specific psychic realities that develop in a group situation, and studies the conditions that make such activity possible. The author takes up and develops here a method of note-taking elaborated for group situations, the aim of which is to distinguish everything by linking the following four levels of group psychic reality : the sensory clinical material, the identification of « basic scenarios » and of the group associative chain, countertransferential and inter-transferential inner reactions (thoughts and emotion), and hypoyheses concerning the « phenomena observed » and the so-called meta-position.
