Psychoanalytic observation of the family group gives us access to the manifestations of the unconscious in the family group psychic space. In the situation of listening to the family group in Psychoanalytic Family Therapy, we can observe the “emotional and sensorial components” and the “behavioural ritualisations” arising from its bonds, as well as the representations that contain them. These “ originary family schemas”, which are repeated in this situation, cover over and express the originary rifts in the family bond in relation to the transgenerational legacy.The author considers the benefits of observing a family “in a group”, the psychoanalytic family therapy group (the neo-group), an observation elucidated by the contributions of Ophélia Avron who has made us aware, in particular, of the “atmosphere” and “feelings” experienced when encountering a family.
