In this article the author reflects on identity and its construction linked to its absence of evolution. The metaphor of the figure of destiny is used to approach the impossibility of subjectivizing the origins of this construction of identity. The hypothesis concerning the absence of evolution of identity resides in two characteristics of mental functioning : the defective identificatory processes and the non-existence of a third party in the linearity of the path of identity. It seems as if an identity that has been constructed on the basis of a mission dictated by the origins of the individual, the absence of one or both of the parents, an early traumatic experience, an impossible mourning of an older child, etc, cannot be deflected from its course by anything. These issues of identity can be approached in the context of an analytic group and can help the subject both to subjectivize his history and to integrate insights that can lead him towards a freedom of choice.
