Analytic group work is characterised by the centrality of the passage of fantasies, thoughts and problems from the individual sphere into the field of the group. The importance of this passage may be likened to the transference and passage from the unconscious to the preconscious and to the conscious in dual analysis. I have chosen the term commuting to indicate the ensemble of the operations linked to this passage. In everyday English, a commuter is a person who lives in the suburbs and who travels into town each day to work. Commuters shuttle back and forth in both directions. For commuting to occur in a small psychoanalytic group, time, effort and a certain degree of creativity is necessary. In some cases, the person “who wants to share a problem” must also first modify his position and his status within the group.
