The linguistic roundabout

In Richard Rorty’s anthology that popularised the term “linguistic turn”, Wittgenstein is considered as one of the central initiators of the idea that we can solve or dissolve philosophical problems by a thorough analysis of their linguistic formulations. However, such a presentation of Wittgenstein is contested by proponents of a “realist” reading, according to which Wittgenstein is interested in language in order to improve our understanding of reality. The aim of the article is to clarify in what sense Wittgenstein’s “grammatical” research allows us to dispel the conceptual confusions that distort our relationship to reality, in a way that differs from any traditional epistemological approach.
