The reform of Patent Law in Europe is an old project. Although it started with the creation of the European Patent in 1973, it has now been halted because European states could not manage to implement new reforms. This paper presents the economic issues underlying these reforms and the problems their implementation could raise. To this end, it analyzes the current patent system as well as the main projects that have been put forward so far.
