Taking the “Corporate” Out of Corporate Social Responsibility: Political Issues of a Terminology Debate
Type de matériel :

The semantic ambiguities of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are twofold: neither a single terminology nor a common definition can be linked to this concept. In this context, in 2004 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) launched the setting process of a guidance standard on social responsibility. One of the main objectives of this project is to find and promote a common terminology in the CSR field. It might therefore reduce the semantic ambiguity linked to the concept of CSR but also transform the terminology used worldwide from CSR to SR. The question investigated throughout this paper is: what are the political issues at stake in the terminological debate concerning dropping the “C” in CSR? We find four main arguments invoked in this debate and we underlined the political issues at stake. CODE JEL: Z130
