In 2013, the European Commission designed a set of energy dependence indicators in order to look at the evolution of Member States’ energy dependence over recent years. For a country such as Belgium, this type of evaluation is particularly relevant because Belgian ground does not contain any indigenous fossil fuel resource, the potential of renewable energy sources is relatively limited, and nuclear energy is being phased out. This paper compares and gauges the future trends of some energy dependence indicators according to two different policy scenarios. The first incorporates adopted policies, including the 2020 EU climate and energy package, while the second scenario looks into the effect of the 2030 EU climate and energy framework and the low-carbon economy roadmap towards 2050.
