The economic and financial crisis that was initiated in the United States in 2007 in the market of subprime mortgages, gradually spread to financial markets around the world and seriously affected the economic growth of the most developed countries in the following years. This article aims to measure the impact of this global crisis on professional sports in Europe. The study focuses on soccer and compares the evolution of several financial indexes (budgets, TV rights, payrolls, transfer balances, etc.) in four different countries (England, Spain, France and Greece). The results show that the economic crisis had a highly differentiated impact on professional sport across countries, which stems from the countries’ quality of economic fundamentals and the robustness of the financial structure of clubs and leagues.
