Monetary Policy in the Wake of the Great Recession

The global financial crisis that erupted in 2007 posed significant challenges for monetary authorities. In this article, we try to highlight how the Great Recession affected the monetary policy of major central banks. The first section addresses the pre-crisis consensus, discusses crisis-induced innovations and draws several lessons from the crisis for monetary policy. The second section focuses on the Eurosystem’s monetary policy and describes in more detail how it has evolved over recent years.JEL Codes: E52, E58, G01
