This article looks at senior citizens’ fitness and sports activities. It is based on secondary processing of the survey on sports and the French conducted in 2000, which was the most recent national survey on a wide range of sports activities. The paper analyses the specific characteristics of the senior population in terms of exercise and types of activity. The decision to analyse seniors from age 50 up is highly relevant. The analysis of the data highlights a significant change in sports activities in the 50-54 age group. There is a steady decline in exercise with age: continuing the trend of people aged under 50, the percentage of non-retirees who play sport after 50 declines, although it is stable among retirees. There are also disparities between seniors according to gender, retirement status, wealth and education level. Regarding types of activity, seniors no longer try out new activities and gradually focus more on a single activity. They steadily withdraw from physically demanding and high-risk activities, such as team sports, preferring moderate-impact exercise. While the 50-69 age group seems only to redefine the types of sport they do, the70-75 age shows a steep decline in sport altogether.
