Invoking the Name of Jesus: a risky devotion
Type de matériel :
36
The invocation of the name of Jesus is a form of prayer attested to in the New Testament, that has been present throughout Christian history. It can be envisaged in three ways: contemplation, therapy, or invocation for salvation. However, it is not without theological questions, and both the West and de East have experienced quite lively conflicts about it. The denounced abuses are not so much to be identified with magic, for believers did not imagine that they could acquire power over God by invoking the Name, as with a form of idolatry in which a created reality takes the place of God, in which a word takes the place of the one it designates.
