From Marius Victorinus to the New Vulgate, these two verses have been in Latin exegesis the locus of inquiry into the meaning of the Greek term ξένοι and into the relationship between Jews and non-Jews before and after Christ. They have made it possible to deepen the theological meaning of hospitality. They have also contributed to the developement of the idea of going beyond ancient hospitality with a view to a universal fraternity in a city or a common dwelling. It would be regrettable to forget or neglect this biblical heritage, especially in contemporary thinking on European unity.
