In this article the author evokes the conditions of a usage current to French thought. It indicates the distances that must taken with the more demanding features of modernity. It also highlights, in this context, the altogether unique tone of Lavelle’s work for anyone with any desire at all to understand it on the basis of the demand for intimacy and radicality which is found therein. On this basis it is possible to accept the lavellian injunction to define its contours and limits, and to restore its benevolent permanence in the capacity for interiorization, which remains the best contribution of French philosophy to the European spirit.
