The author examines four of Yves Congar’s revisions of his ecclesiological work between 1970 and 1982. Congar’s thought about the Church’s institutional dimension and its connection to Pneumatology progressively finds a point of equilibrium: the pair foundation/institution and a pneumatological Christology allow him to take stock of the Holy Spirit’s “actualism,” while the concept of co-institution safeguards the functional unity of Christ and the Holy Spirit. It fails however to give the institution its actual institutive dimension, undoubtedly for lack of a theology of institution that does justice to the eschatological tension which flows through the life of the Church.
