As procureur général of the Parlement of Paris from 1650, Nicolas Fouquet played a very delicate role as a mediator between the Parlement and the Conseil du Roi, at a time when the Fronde was aggravating the conflict between these two bodies. In this position he proved himself to be a skilful negotiator and staller, ostensibly yielding to the grievances of the rebellious judges, while ensuring that monarchical authority was maintained whenever possible. Though he undeniably belonged to the loyalist faction, the study of his actions shows that he was less a creature of Mazarin than a man who saw himself in the service of the queen regent.
