The Enigma of Mysterium fidei

When C. Vagaggini wrote that “the third major failing of the Roman Canon” before Vatican Council II “is the insertion of the words Mysterium fidei” into the consecratory formula for wine, he suggested, in spite of himself, something quite serious, specifically, the frivolity and or incompetence of those responsible for the insertion. Yet, to the eyes of anyone who reads these words thinking not of our faith, but of Christ’s, this insertion appears in an altogether favorable light. May we suppose that such was the thought of those responsible and that consequently they should be declared innocent, with blame falling upon those who subsequently suppressed the faith of Christ? As long as this supposition goes without confirmation or refutation – is either possible? – the genesis of the old formula of consecration for wine will remain an enigma
