The published work and posthumous writings of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche indicate just how much these two thinkers struggled to write and publish for their time (and equally for posterity), as they sought to come to the aid of an age they took to be sick and in decline. A writer as much as a philosopher, Kierkegaard stuck to the task right to the end, offering his work by offering his time, measured by the approach of its fatal end. Even though the substantial consistency of the work (in Danish: the dialectical productivity) escapes the author’s grasp, and though he subsequently claims to have been guided by Providence, his efforts remain the work of a writer capable of giving what he has received.
