We must admit that we know very little about the formative phase of eucharistic celebration and that there is a plurality of forms of expression and interpretation of its full meaning in the Church. In view of the ple- thora of present-day Christian eucharistic liturgies, this study proposes to bring together several important elements to understand the fundamental factors that enable a sense of identity in the practice of the Lord’s Supper, all the while demonstrating its legitimate diversity. We shall thus take up the question of the historical roots of the Lord’s Supper in order to bring out the fundamental elements of this practice of taking meals after Easter and thus seeking possible constant factors in how the Lord’s Supper was conceived of by the first Christians.
