This article addresses two questions: A sermon occurs in about twenty modern or contemporary novels. Why is this, and what sets of themes are dealt with? In the main, the answer is the confrontation with evil. And following on from this: What purpose does a speech serve in novels? The authors studied are Kleist, Jacobsen, Camus, Gracq, Pagnol, Hogg, Hawthorne, Daudet, Joyce, Gide, Bernanos, Greene, Tournier, Eliot, Bosco, Melville, Leskov, Wiechert.
