Pierre Salama's research field is focused on the development of semi-industrialized economies, using a comparative approach. The author studied the State in Latin America from a theoretical point of view and tried to explain its particularities. He subsequently worked on the drug economy within emergent economies and the causes of violence in Latin America. Finally his works touched on the impact of the financial boom on growth, income distribution, and poverty wherein he used comparative analysis not only between Latin American economies, but especially between the latter and major Asian economies. His last book is Le défi des inégalités, une comparaison économique Amérique latine/Asie (2007).
