International Criminal Justice and Electoral Violence

In 2010, the International Criminal Court (ICC) authorized the opening of an official investigation into the violence that ravaged Kenya after the 2007 presidential elections. This will be the first bona fide proceedings that pursue those bearing the greatest responsibility for the electoral violence that has plagued the country since the early 1990s. The ICC is thus Kenya’s only hope for breaking the country’s record of complete impunity, which would constitute an unprecedented achievement. Nonetheless, numerous expectations that go beyond the imprisonment of a few perpetrators appear unrealistic.
