This article explores the determinants of farming households’ commitmentto the certification process, or lack thereof, following the 2005 Madagascanland reform. The field work, which was carried out in a rural town in theHighlands, shows that (i) the main motivation for requesting a certificateis securing one’s land tenure, independently from the prospect of futureinvestments or land sale, and (ii) the characteristics of the plot of landinfluence both the decision to obtain a certificate and the choice of theplots for which a certificate is requested.
