In this article, we aim to put forth a psycho-sociological analysis of the professional mobility policy tested in the French departments of America (DFA), in relation to the employment and economic development objectives that have been assigned to it for over 40 years. We consider that social practices, associated with political and ideological conflict, may give rise to the emergence of further unforeseen processes; the effects of such a sequence of actions, if not correctly analysed, may distort the objective evaluation of the social process. We therefore estimate that an objective study of professional geographic mobility based on a study of individual trajectories is capable of revealing a remarkable continuity between the “migration of work” in the 1960s and 70s and the “mobility of training” which ensued in the 1980s.
