Mobility as a transitional space: A site-based approach

Considering that European mechanisms promoting mobility offer a renewed vision of professional and training paths, this contribution proposes to study how subjects trained through work-based apprenticeships seize these opportunities. Mobility is linked to postmodern notions of agility and flexibility. The mobile individual is caught in a double movement through time and space. Mobility becomes a theatre in which people’s identities are being reorganized. This mostly qualitative research is based on interviews and drawings of places that were visited and lived in during the mobility episode. Our results highlight the uses that post-apprentices make of the available system. They underline the learning and identity changes that appear when in contact with unknown places, making it possible to consider this arrangement of space and time as a transitional space.
