Based on Habermas’s theory of communicative action, this article gives a preview of the common educative basis of numerous and various actions taking place in public libraries, such as training programs, conferences, round tables, workshops, master classes, pathways, conversations, clubs and miscellaneous programs. The concepts of system and medium help us describe learning possibilities related to rational mutual understanding within this institution. Empirical data collected through participant observation complete the exploratory findings. Taken together, these elements suggest a renewed appreciation of the role of public libraries with regard to popular education.
