Robert Musil’s quest for a “daylight mystic” devoid of occultism breaks with the irrationalism that looms large in interwar Germany and Austria. In contrast to many of his contemporaries, Musil does not celebrate the downfall of reason. Rather, he draws on the science of his time – in particular Gestalt psychology – to gain further insights into ecstasy.
