Janet’s Ecstatic Patient, Madeleine Lebouc: How the Experience of Ecstasy Was Written
Type de matériel :
33
Madeleine Lebouc, Janet’s famous ecstatic patient, was supposed to exemplify a case of “psychasthenic madness”, between hysteria and obsessive disorders. She left more than 2 000 pages of both spiritual and clinical self-description. Starting from the recent historiography of the case by Jacques Maître who identified the true woman behind Madeleine, this paper takes a fresh look at the way Madeleine’s mystical writings and “mental condition” might be even more closely connected than previously thought.
