In his novel Angel Guerra (1890-1891), Benito Pérez Galdós mentions the constitutive nightmares of his hero. The analysis of these dreams makes clear the implicit or explicit conceptions of the author regarding the relationships between words and images. They are very similar to Freudian theories. The primal fantasies in Angel Guerra are represented through famous paintings which are metaphors of the preconscious material of the dream, in relation to unconscious elements.
