Under what circumstances are we entitled to evoke an encounter between cinema and psychoanalysis? Beyond the dispute over cinema between Freud and K. Abraham in 1925, we can retrospectively claim that the encounter took place in 1919 with regard to Lubitsch’s film, Die Puppe. The publication, that same year, of Freud’s famous essay “Die Unheimlichkeit” just a few months before the release of the film, leads us to investigate the modalities of this encounter. Die Puppe offers the first point of intersection between psychoanalysis and cinema through the structural logic of the discourses at stake. The signifier of the doll, with its numerous ramifications in the artistic field and its specific etymology, attests to the privileged place reserved for “ objet a” as agent of desire.
