The rise of design research integrated within companies and the limited existing scientific publications on the subject have led us to share our experience as designers in an industrial doctoral research program framework. This case study is intended to contribute to the documentation related to industrial research programs. It seeks to understand how environments are shaped and how they can affect the dynamics of industrial doctoral research in design. Through methods such as an autoethnographic process and graphical mapping, this paper describes three industrial doctoral research contexts in design and the common dynamics they involve. The definition of a common graphic language provides insight into how the positioning of the industrial actor, the integration of design practice, and the multidisciplinary conversation have a significant role in the industrial doctoral research environment in design. Finally, this article considers the strategic, methodological, and epistemological influences they can have on the research dynamics.
