Traumatic dreams and exiles’ nightmares

Difficulty sleeping, or even finding it impossible, the repetition of horrific nightmares, and the tenacity of nocturnal terrors are often the reasons why refugees at a reception and orientation center (centre d’acceuil et d’orientation, OAC) present themselves at “l’accueil-psy,” a support service that has been offered for three years by volunteer psychoanalysts. Listening to their complaints and inviting them to relate what haunts their days and nights is a way of entering into existences that life has cruelly mistreated. It is also an opportunity to test Freud’s theories on dreams, trauma, and death drive.
