In Jean Cocteau’s novel Children of the Game (1925), the children are alone: Elisabeth, her brother Paul, and their friends Gérard and Agathe are disoriented and left by themselves in a world reduced to a closed, messy bedroom which acts as the stage of their asocial games and of their tragic future.Elisabeth, whose nickname “iron virgin” implies her cruelty, is the main character of the drama. She is a liar and a manipulating bully and rules over the bedroom and its inhabitants, turning their life into a real hell. We shall focus our analysis on this tyrannical child and shall try to clarify the significations and stakes of her acts: insults, robberies, and lies.
