Forced Hospitalization

Hospitalizing individuals suffering from a mental disorder against their will may be a therapeutic necessity. Resisting the trend to bring the courts into every aspect of life, the French Act dated 27 June 1990 reforming the Act of 30 June 1838, only gives partial support to progress and modern methods of treatment. The withdrawal in November 2006 of Articles 18 to 24 of the bill on crime prevention eliminated a security-driven vision. Given that compulsory healthcare procedures take place in an atmosphere of urgency, the reform expected by users and professionals would consist in lightening procedures and reinforcing post-treatment control. Such reforms are, of course, linked to changes to the mental health system.
