Islam, Engine of Citizenship

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2003. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : In opposition to the discourses which presume of the inherent incompatibility between Islam and French-style citizenship, this article argues that their meshing together is not only possible, but a work in progress. These findings rest upon an investigation of the broadly based Young French Muslims association, which comprises a series of interviews with its members and leaders. This study first develops a model intrinsically binding novelty to the use of voice in order to conciliate two distinct belief-systems which simultaneously draw upon one’s loyalty. Secondly, it endeavours to render these young Muslims’ complex reinterpretation of Islam. In their integralist yet compromising view, Islam not only meshes with French-style citizenship, it brings it into play when dealing with numerous civic matters, such as national loyalty, basic law abidingness, the question of ethnic versus national loyalty, and voting.
