To answer the question of what is involved for sociologists to develop their theoretical and empirical work—in a society where the image has become more and more diffuse and the privileged channel of the communication—this study examines three interconnected elements: the sociology of the image according to the social implications of the power of visualization and visibility; the subjects, and in particular the importance of in-depth study and analysis of what they do with the images; and the problem related to the growth of knowledge that study of images and of communicating by images affords the socials sciences.
