The Père Cent Celebration: A High School Party and a Rite of Passage
Type de matériel :
15
One hundred days before graduation from secondary school (the French baccalauréat), the graduating students dress up and collect money in the street, have lunch together, and enjoy an evening of dancing. This sociological case study of the “ Père cent” celebration, stemming from very old and popular customs, shows how it marks the transition from childhood to adulthood: a rite of passage in which the feast assumes the preliminaries’ role according to Arnold van Gennep. Nothing is officially instituted; the social behavior moves by collective imagination. The baccalauréat is simultaneously the indicator, the cause for this celebration, and an opportunity to shape this rite of passage.
