The amputation of a limb and the loss of motor capacities that this amputation causes very often involve a dissolution of the patient’s identity. In the framework of the process of rehabilitation, prosthetic equipment therefore has the function of helping the patient to overcome this double mutilation of the body and of the identity. But a prosthetic limb is an ambivalent object that causes contradictory identity processes and perceptions. It creates suffering and doubt, for it happens necessarily within the framework of a difficult experience and because its use involves a lot of inconvenience. But it is also an extraordinary form of reconstruction, for it allows the amputee to reinvest in his or her own body, daily environment, and ultimately social space. From a series of conversations with people at various stages of their experiences of prosthetics, this article aim to shed light on the complex course of the functional and identity rehabilitation that individuals given external prosthetics will undergo.
