Cet article explique, à partir d’une enquête multi-sites, l’état paradoxal de la pratique ecclésiale du secret qui préside à la gestion de l’homosexualité chez les clercs de l’Église catholique en Occident. Dans un environnement institutionnel marqué par une libéralisation relative de la conjugalité homosexuelle et un appel à l’authenticité en matière desexualité, on montrera que l’institution éprouve la nécessité de réaménager la probabilité que ces clercs se taisent au sujet de leurs préférences sexuelles. Ce faisant, on proposera l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’importante mobilisation du Vatican pour inventer puis lutter contre son ennemi de papier, « la-théorie-du-genre », participerait de cet objectif.

Drawing on research carried out in various locations, this article analyzes the paradox surrounding the ecclesiastical practice of secrecy regarding the management of homosexuality among Catholic clergy in the West. It argues that in a society marked by a relative liberalization of same-sex partnerships and a calling for sincerity when it comes to sexuality, the church feels compelled to increase the likelihood that gay clergy will keep quiet. In doing so, the author advances the hypothesis that the Vatican’s extensive efforts to invent and then fight against the phantom enemy of “gender-theory” supports this aim.
