A comparative examination of the evolving role of the private sector (insurance and care providers) in some other large healthcare systems originally conceived using very different models (‘liberal,’ ‘Beveridge,’ and ‘Bismarck’) can help us understand certain contradictions in the French structure, which aims to, in particular, reduce competition between healthcare institutions to protect public hospitals whilst further increasing private insurance coverage in outpatient care, in both cases at the expense of health insurance (i.e. insured persons).
