This paper reports a study on the physical and social correspondence that exists in the urban space, which aimed to observe the architecture and its forms of social apprehension. In detail, we performed an experimental study of the symbolic function in the urban space by applying the method “Archetype-Test of Place by 9-Elements” (ATL-9) in the Boa Vista neighborhood, in the city of Recife (Brazil). This study was developed as an extension activity - the Workshop Urban Imaginaries -, in the Architecture and Urbanism course of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), in the year 2016. Through this study, symbolic facts were obtained and materialized through images (drawings) and senses (reports), as well as a spatialization and organization of these facts in a significant subset. Articulated to the concerns of the urban architect, this experience fosters a practical study of the imaginary, explored through the methodological approach that guides the knowledge of the urban reality, as well as striving for new ways of facing and developing the project, while considering the characteristics of the places and their occupants.
