This paper provides the first thoroughgoing history of Latinxs in mainstream TV shows. It archives the willful misrepresentations in mainstream media of Latinxs from Speedy Gonzalez and to today’s TV shows like Modern Family. At the same time, it also provides a roadmap through a history of mediatized representation of Latinxs that rupture stereotypes and provide willful and nuanced reconstructions of Latinx subjectivities and experiences. Here we consider yesteryear’s TV shows such as CHiPs and Chico and the Man as well as today’s shows such as Cristela, Orange Is the New Black.
