The enthusiastic reception of The Paradise and Mr Selfridge, two television series relating to the advent of department stores, the ultimate symbol of democratization of modern luxury, raises the question of whether these stores have fulfilled the expectations and desires of their owners as much as those of the public. Indeed, suppose in our hypermodern society that nostalgia develops a valorization of the past, which reveals links between the old and the current. In that case, this reflection makes it possible to question the highlighting in these series of the values that enabled the rise of the bourgeoisie and the capital that characterized it, while offering a share of dreams. Thus, this article seeks to demonstrate that these elements are always at the center of social concerns, hence their emphasis in these series.
