Social media literacy in contemporary society and the digital media ecosystem

This paper analyzes the characteristics of social media, in the light of changes that have affected society generally, since the 1990s, and the entire mediascape. The goal is to understand why, in contemporary digital society, users-consumers-spectators must acquire an adequate level of social media literacy. This could be achieved through training programs and courses that are specifically designed to train professional figures—in academia and the business world—in how to move within a complex media ecosystem.
