Pandemic or syndemic? How has the COVID-19 crisis exacerbated already-existing vulnerabilities?

The concept of vulnerability is a relatively recent notion in the field of science. Vulnerability, which is both universal and structural, emerges in a contextual manner and is accompanied by new forms of social action based on life paths and personalised assistance. After the emergence of Covid-19, vulnerabilities were reinforced and accumulated in fragile populations that suffered more than others from the multiple effects of the health crisis. Thus, it seems more accurate to define this disease not as a “pandemic” but as a “syndemic”, it’s a set of closely related vulnerabilities “mutually reinforcing and significantly affecting the health status of a population”. The emergence of Covid-19 in vulnerable populations has had an effect on both dimensions of life, both length (life expectancy) and breadth (quality of life).
