Speaking like an expert

Management consulting has rarely been studied through the lens of embodiment. However consultants' assignments in customers' organizations specifically require them to efficiently embody expertise. This article shows how specific forms of talk play a central role in building consultants' legitimacy. Management consultancies have institutionalized training sessions and coaching to help their employees master a complex set of discursive and bodily processes and to enable them to come across as experts. Even if every consultant is expected to comply with specific professional vocal norms and forms of talk, this aspect of the job is gendered and exposes women to experience illegitimacy in their practice.
