The French audiovisual sector (cinema, radio, television), which relies mainly on the hiring of intermittent workers, is now facing public calls for permanent, salaried jobs to be made available, in particular for technical workers. Based on a qualitative study conducted with professionals in sound, image, editing, set design, or even wardrobe and make-up, we explore in this article the salient features of the career paths of these workers, along with the types of employment trajectories that can be observed in a sector with diverse productive configurations. This analysis of employment experiences in the audiovisual sector sheds light on the way in which they distance themselves from the permanent employment promoted by the public authorities. We also show that the relationship to employment of audiovisual technical workers cannot be fully understood without taking into account their commitment to the work activity and that it is characterized by strong attachment to the intermittent employment regime, subject however to the social conditions of possibility that we highlight.
