“Under the skin” of police officers

The “one big family” and “one big home” images are idealized representations often used to symbolize police team spirit. However, reality has fallen far short of this vision of a unified group. All police officers emphasize the presence of internal borders that separate police forces and units. The strong segmentation of this professional sphere reduces police officers’ sense of belonging to the tiny group in which they work daily. Some of them even across the border between police officer and non-police officer by mobilizing the non-professional dimensions of their identity (political, sports, etc.) to define themselves. Looking “under the skin” of police officers, by exploring behind-the-scenes activities—at work and outside work—provides a better understanding of the shared perception of the dispersion of the police identity, and helps to explain professional boundaries by differences other than those produced by the police institution.
