The manufacture of commitment to work through religious belief. The prosperity gospel and success in a real estate business
Type de matériel :
44
Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, this article shows how a real estate company use a system of shared beliefs, mixing evangelical Protestantism, personal development and economic success, to generate work consent and effort among new recruits. Through informal socialization and training devices, managers, trainers and experienced agents encourage newer agents to adopt practices that increase their personal development and that enhance their work performance. The article does not offer a ready-made answer on the relations between work, religion and capitalism, but invites to question the impact of a socialization through a belief system on work consent and effort.
